Software Club March 2021

Hello everyone, I hope you are all staying safe and warm from the bitter winds this week.

This month’s Software Club will be meeting via Zoom on Sunday, March 14 from 9:30 to 11:30 am and again on Friday, March 19 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

What was old seems to be new again. Chenille seems to be making a comeback and several embroidery design websites are selling designs with this element. Kimberbell has just come out with a set of chenille designs to make into pillows. So I thought, why don't we make our own instead of buying the designs? This way we can make them our own and have fun in the process.

For those that don’t know, the Chenille effect is achieved by using multiple layers of fabric and slicing them open. We can use a similar technique to add dimension to thin knit fabrics as well using appliqué or reverse appliqué and slicing the knit fabric. We can create similar designs using SuperDesigns and the Quilt Design wizard in our software. In this project we will make some simple chenille designs that can be used as blocks to make a hot pad, bag, pillow or even a quilt if you’re feeling ambitious. We will then create some simple designs that can be used on clothing with knit fabric.

I've come up with a chenille hot pad and quilt block so far, as well as a flower design for slicing on a knit fabric:

In order to get the most out of the Zoom session, we found that having two devices was a benefit. You can use your laptop to do the lesson with me and then have the Zoom meeting on a tablet or even smart phone to see what I'm doing on my screen. If you don't have two devices, you can use two windows on the one screen, but it did take some finagling to get it working properly.  We found it useful that the device with your zoom session has voice capability.

If you plan to join me for this month’s Software Club, please sign up online at our  website www.sew-jos.ca/classes.htm so that I can forward you the instructions and handouts beforehand as well as provide the Zoom information. If you haven't prepaid for the year, the fee is $15.

If you have prepaid and attending, the same coupon code as last year will work.  If you haven't yet prepaid for the year, but wish to, you can do so online by searching for Annual or by giving the store a call and paying over the phone.

Let me know if you can't find the appropriate coupon code or if you have any issues. If you have stitched out any previous sessions’ design(s) please have it (them) close at hand as well, or any show and tell. We all like to see what you have been doing.

Hope to see you online. If you can't make it on these dates, I will record the session for later viewing so even if you can't actually join us on one of these sessions, you can still sign up and access the information.
