Beginner Sewing: Tote Bag



This class is for absolute beginners who want to learn the basics of machine sewing.  This is a 6 week course beginning with a background information session on types of fabric, fabric construction, tools, notions, and machine parts and functions. Students will practice basic sewing techniques on a new electronic sewing machine while producing a lunch-sized tote bag with zippered top.  Students will learn to fully read and use a commercial sewing pattern.

This is a six week course, 2 hours per session. Kit to be purchased in class which includes a commercial pattern. Maximum 8 students.


Instructor: Jutta Hof
Instructor Bio: Jutta Hof is a retired elementary school teacher with the OCDSB who taught a variety of subjects at the intermediate level which included family studies (cooking and sewing). She has taught several beginner level sewing classes at Yarn Forward in the past 14 years including kids’ classes during the summer months. She is an active member of the Ottawa Valley Quilters Guild and has shown several of her quilts at the bi-annual Quilt Show at the RA Centre in May and at local fairs.
