Beginner Japanese Project Bag Appliqué Class

This class is for absolute beginners who want to learn the basics of applique. Over the course of four sessions, make and embellish a project bag based on a Komebukuro – Japanese rice bag. The bag will finish at 8” tall and 6” wide. It will showcase various techniques:
• Construction of a project bag with a ribbon closure;
• Making a quilt block in variety of ways (piecing, snowballing, positive/negative space);
• Walking foot machine quilting;
• Raw edge appliqué;
• Faced appliqué;
• Reverse appliqué.
Day 1
- Gather materials, press and cut fabric for the bag.
- Piece background panels for bag bottom and three of the sides. These three sides will be backgrounds for appliqué embellishments.
Day 2
- Piece fourth bag panel in a shape of fall leaf.
- Finish any outstanding work.
- Reinforce structure with fusible interfacing.
- Cut fabric for the bag lining and ribbon.
Day 3 - It’s all about applique!
- Cut, piece, fuse and affix appliqué with three different techniques: raw edge, reverse, and faced.
- Add embellishments using specialty stitches on the sewing machine, if desired.
Day 4 - Putting it all together
- Cut and sew the tabs and ribbon for the handle/closure.
- Assemble the bag.
- Assemble the lining.
- Put the bag together.
This is a four week course, 2 hours per session. Kit to be purchased in class which includes all the required fabrics. Maximum 6 students.
